Determine To Be Determined

”If you stand up and be counted, from time to time you may get yourself knocked down. But remember this: A man flattened by an opponent can get up again. A man flattened by conformity stays down for good.”

— Thomas J. Watson, Jr.

I’ve already written to you about the real difference between having passion or a pedigree. Passion is important, but you aren’t determined, you’re doomed right out of the gate.

You have to determine that you will be determined. That means that you really need to decide ahead of time that you are’t going to give up. Ok Seigmund, way too basic you say. Not so.  If it were so basic and simple, everyone would do it, and there would be sooo much more success out there in the real world.

Here’s the deal. The World is designed to help you fail. Most of you are following that plan well and willingly. You’re biding your time where you are until something better comes along. That’s being complacent. Or, you’re following old and dead practices because that’s how things have always been done. That’s apathy. Combine all of this with a nature of quitting, or even not starting, because of the fear of failure. This is a lack of determination.

There, see? You really do need to determine to be determined. You need to have passion about what you are doing and where you re going. Along with that fire of passion, you need to make those flames unquenchable by your determination!

You CAN decide to be determined.

  • First, whatever it is you’re passionate about needs to have some soul. It needs to be something greater than yourself. It needs to give you a purpose, and therefore, the people following you purpose.
  • IF, what you are doing has this kind of soul, then ask yourself this. What value does it have to others? Really? Does it bring value to someones life? Does it solve a problem and do it well?
  • Now, if it fulfills these requirements, you need to know something. This will probably be difficult. Hard. Troublesome. You will probably have some failures. It will most likely suck at some point. Will you quit? You don’t have to.

See, determination is the ability to go on, beyond the suck. To see past the inconvenience of the moment, or some temporary pain, and realize the incredible other side of things. Determination is the ability to know that, beyond the minutia of the day to day grind, is the bigger picture of what you are all passionate about anyway.

Determination will save you. If you stay determined, you will have no other option than to win. It’s that complicated and simple, all at the same time. If you stay determined, you will be completely unlike 95% of the people who think that they are your competitors. If you stay determined, the people looking to you for direction will follow you, because they know you won’t give up or give in. If you stay determined, your clients will love you because they know that you will deliver, no matter what.

What will you now determine to do?

Even the most distant dream can be realized with determination and persistence. Those who have “stick-to-it-tiveness” eventually win! Wise words and great tips, Rick.

Thanks again Kent. It’s the “one thing” that will separate any success from the rest.
